Till now 44 people lost their life and almost five are still missing. A latest report says that a Malayali couple is also among the dead and their son is reported to be missing. The family settled in Coimbatore, came to Kerala to celebrate Pooja holiday.  

The boat tragedies are not new in Kerala, anymore. The first boat tragedy occurred in 1924, January 16 at Kollam. The boat named Redeemer capsized killing 24 people. 136 people were in the board. This tragedy was a blow to the literature world as our great poet Kumaranashan was among the dead. 

In 1958, July 21 witnesses another water tragedy in which 35 people e were killed when a boat overturned in Malampuzha dam. The deceased were labourers working in estates

Boat tragedy in kannamalli, Ernakulam on 1980, March 19 took the life of 29 pilgrims. 

In 1983, September 23, 18 people were killed in boat mishap near Murrikumpadam boat jetty, Kochi. It was pilgrim group. 

The auspicious day of Christmas of 1990 also witnessed a tragedy in Pepara dam at Thiruvananthapuram. 7 people were killed in the tragedy.

In July 27, 2002, a boat capsized killing 29 people in Vembanattu lagoon near Kumarakom. The deceased were youngsters who were going to attend PSC exam. 

February 27 of 2007 witnessed the most heartbreaking boat tragedy killing 18 people in which 15 were small schoolchildren. The mishap happened in Thattekad.
